Set against the majestic backdrop of the Lubombo Mountain Range, the 7th Edition of the Mlawula Campfire Festival set for September 25–27, 2026 stands as Eswatini’s premier outdoor eco-tourism and camping celebration.
Hosted at the Siphiso Campsite within the pristine Mlawula Nature Reserve, this three-day gathering seamlessly blends music, nature, community faith and regional culture. Organised under the custodianship of the custodian of Eswatini’s natural and cultural heritage Eswatini National Trust Commission (ENTC), the festival offers an immersive escape that highlights the Kingdom’s commitment to sustainable biodiversity conservation and community-led tourism.
From Conservation Roots to Eco-Fest Rival
Established by the ENTC, the Mlawula Campfire Festival was conceived to promote domestic and regional travel to Eswatini’s eastern eco-tourism circuit. Historically, tourism in Eswatini centred around the Ezulwini Valley and Mbabane corridors. The Campfire Festival was strategically launched to decentralise visitor footprint, shining a spotlight on the ecologically rich Lubombo landscape, a global biodiversity hotspot known for its rare dry forest ecosystems, bird life and dramatic gorge hikes. Over seven editions, the event has evolved from an intimate overnight camping trip into a massive lifestyle gathering. It bridges the gap between environmental education and modern African lifestyle culture, proving that protected nature reserves can host vibrant, low-impact tourism events without compromising conservation integrity.
Star-Studded 2026 Lineup- A Fusion of Genres and Culture
The 7th Edition presents one of the most diverse artist rosters in the event’s history, striking a deliberate balance between contemporary regional hitmakers, local legends and uplifting gospel ministry:
Headlining Regional Talent: South African Amapiano and Afro-house sensation Boohle headlines the stage, bringing hit tracks like “Siyathandana” and “Yini Na” into the heart of the wild.
Local Eswatini Giants: Afro-soul maestro Bholoja leads the local live music contingent, joined by top-tier entertainers such as The Bishop, Cedric, Zulu D, Uncle Karly, Lord F, Sgitha and Culolam.
High-Energy DJ Sets: The festival features nonstop electronic and dance sets from DJ MBO, DJ Khuni, Lady Zee, DJ Tempt, Young Zesh, Bandora, and the Shepard Brothers.
Faith & Sunday Cultural Experience: Sunday is dedicated to a vibrant Culture Experience. Gospel powerhouses Shongwe & Khuphuka Saved Group and Linda Dlamini anchor a morning of worship and reflection, followed by traditional dance and storytelling under the open sky.
Strategic Impact on Eswatini’s Tourism Prospects
The Mlawula Campfire Festival serves as a key catalyst for regional economic growth and sustainable destination marketing:
Economic Decentralisation to the East: The influx of thousands of campers generates direct revenue for small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs), local food vendors, transport operators and fuel stations across Siteki, Simunye, and Lomahasha.
Promoting “Bleisure” and Cross-Border Travel: Positioned near the Mozambique and South African borders, the festival attracts regional road-trippers, aligning perfectly with the Triland tripartite agreement between Eswatini, Mpumalanga and Mozambique.
Fostering Domestic Travel Culture: By offering affordable camping packages and equipment rentals, ENTC lowers the barrier to entry for domestic tourists, encouraging EmaSwati to explore their own natural heritage.
Mzwandile Ntshangase, ENTC’s Business Development and Marketing Manager highlighted that the Commission’s primary objective is to decentralise national tourism footprint by showcasing the rich biodiversity of the eastern Lubombo region. By bringing together a diverse lineup, spanning headlining regional acts like Boohle, local legends such as Bholoja and Sunday gospel celebrations with Linda Dlamini ENTC offers an accessible, family-friendly outdoor experience that encourages domestic and regional travellers to explore Eswatini’s protected nature reserves.
“This flagship gathering represents far more than an outdoor music event, it is a strategic driver for sustainable eco-tourism, environmental conservation and regional community empowerment.” Ntshangase said.
The Road Ahead- Elevating Sustainable Event Tourism
As Eswatini continues to build its annual events calendar around sustainable “A Wonder Awaits” brand pillars, the Mlawula Campfire Festival sets the template for eco-conscious event management. Looking toward future editions, the ENTC plans to expand the festival’s footprint by introducing permanent eco-glamping infrastructure, broadening international media partnerships and integrating renewable energy setups for stage productions. By proving that environmental conservation and high-caliber entertainment can thrive together, the Mlawula Campfire Festival ensures that Eswatini remains a dynamic, forward-thinking destination for adventure seekers across Africa and beyond.
Through this festival, ENTC aims to build lasting appreciation for wild space conservation while generating direct economic opportunities for local communities, vendors, and hospitality operators across Siteki and Lomahasha.
As ETA, riding on ENTC’s mandate, invite all adventure seekers, families and campers to join us around the fire as we celebrate nature, culture and togetherness in true Swazi fashion.
