Discover Happiness Hiking Challenge, 30 April 2022

The Ezulwini Municipality continues to inspire travel to the vibrant tourism town of Ezulwini. This time, they present the Discover Happiness Hiking Challenge to one Eswatini’s most breath-taking landmarks, Sheba’s Breasts. The hike will take place on 30 April 2022 and kicks off at 6am from Lidwala Lodge located at the Roki Centre.

Sheba’s Breasts are two peaks on the side of the Ezulwini Valley which are visible from afar. The rock formations are named after the legendary beauty and mysterious Queen of Sheba from Ethiopia, who supposedly seduced King Solomon. Legend tells that Sheba’s Breasts are the site of King Solomon’s mines. The Sheba’s Breasts hiking trail is well-maintained and begins at Lidwala Lodge and can be hiked on a 2-3 hour round trip.

The name of the hiking event is derived from the Municipality’s slogan, “Discover Happiness” – describing the feeling that one gets from exploring Ezulwini’s tourism gems. The is organised in partnership with ETA, Emlembe, Lidwala Lodge and Just Fitness.

Commenting on the purpose of the Discover Happiness Hiking Challenge, Ezulwini Municipality’s Acting CEO, Zwakele Dlamini mentioned that this was an extension of their robust efforts to drive domestic tourism, especially after the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic to the tourism sector.

“The Discover Happiness Hiking Challenge is another way of encouraging domestic tourists to continue exploring local attractions by participating in an activity offered by an Eswatini tourism facility in Ezulwini. The hike will draw visitors from all four regions of the country and motivate them to immerse themselves in the various tourism experiences that Ezulwini offers,” said Dlamini.

Dlamini went on to contextualise Ezulwini Municipality’s relationship with the tourism sector, stating that tourism establishments are at the centre of the country’s economy as they employ local youth and support local products and service providers.

“Tourism is at the centre of Ezulwini’s identity as Eswatini’s eminent tourism hub. The town is home to a number of prime accommodation and recreational facilities, subsequently making it an asset for the Eswatini tourism sector and the tourism establishments who are our key rate payers. So, when tourism thrives, Ezulwini thrives,” stated Dlamini.

As one of the Eswatini Tourism Authority’s key partner, the municipality has been actively promoting domestic tourism with a focus on Ezulwini’s diverse and appealing tourism offerings.

Mahamba Gorge Hiking, 1 May 2022

One of the biggest and much-anticipated events on the Eswatini calendar, Mahamba Gorge Hiking, returns this year for its 8th edition. Known for attracting thousands of people from different corners of Eswatini, this is more than just a hiking event. Mahamba Gorge Hiking is a memorable experience for the whole family and a reflection of “tourism with a heart” as it aims to bring positive and sustainable social change in surrounding communities. In previous years, the event has helped thousands of underprivileged people with a portion of the proceeds generated from the event’s registration. The theme for this year is centred on encouraging an end to gender-based violence.

Renowned for being the only mountain in Eswatini with a river (the Mkhondlo River) that cuts gracefully through it, the Mahamba Gorge boasts stunning trails that lead along the river and up over the cliffs into the gorge, where birdwatchers will be take delight in the colony of the rare southern bald ibis. Located below it is the Mahamba Gorge Lodge which has self-catering units.

Speaking on the tourism radio show hosted by the Eswatini Tourism Authority on EBIS 1 this past Wednesday, the event’s Public Relations Officer, Lucky Msibi, expressed that they were glad that the easing of travel regulations has allowed EmaSwati to once gather for events such as this one.

“The response has been great; individuals and groups have been registering in the numbers as is usually the case with each Mahamba Gorge Hiking ever hosted. The Mahamba Gorge is truly a sight to see and for people travelling from afar, there is also the option to book into the amazing Mahamba Gorge Lodge for an enhanced tourist experience,” said Msibi.

Mahamba is indeed a hiker’s paradise, offering diverse recreational amenities. Mahamba Gorge Lodge is close by providing a wide choice of activities. Visitors are able to hike, mountain bike, fish – or simply relax in the stunning surroundings. This being the 6th edition of Mahamba Gorge Hiking, the event is aiming to appeal to even more tourists internationally in years to come.
