Crowned Eagle Chick saved in Mbuluzi Game Reserve

Mbuluzi Game Reserve in Eswatini is the perfect place to enjoy space, tranquillity and animals in an unspoilt environment. Mbuluzi has a wide choice of self-catering lodges to make home for a few days to reconnect with family and friends. Game drives, riverside views, game walks or biking trails (bike hire available) are all options during your stay. Many visitors simply choose to watch the meandering river with its diversity of birds and animals from their lodge!

Mbuluzi is a nature-lovers paradise and the team that work at Mbuluzi are all dedicated to protecting the wide range of animals that live there. This year the resident pair of crowned eagles took up their usual nesting spot in a large tree only for a catastrophe to unfold.

During one of the ominous tropical summer storms that occur in the area, the tree that had served the pair of crowned eagles as home for several years was struck and fell down!

It was all systems go and the dedicated team of Mbuluzi Rangers took two days to find the three month old chick cowering in the predator infested undergrowth. A plan was quickly hatched and a makeshift nest was constructed on a purpose built platform in an adjacent tree.

The chick was placed in the home-made nest and the Rangers stepped back and waited!. Very quickly the mother Eagle returned to the chick and continued to feed and protect the young Eagle.

In the first week of May the now cocky young Eagle can be seen practising its hunting skills, only returning to the nest to roost. It will soon be gone but up to now has been a very lucky Eagle.
