Mlilwane Rest Camp
Mlilwane’s Rest Camp is deceptively large, 3 Beehive Villages just north of the camping, a large open area shared by wildlife and guests, a string of self-catering cottages along the western periphery of the camp and our historical Rest Camp Huts in the central area, near the Hippo Haunt Restaurant, Reception and Activities Centre. There is also a 20-stand campsite in the southern area, A large swimming pool, day visitor facilities and Environmental Educational area provide lots to do within the Rest Camp within Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary.
Our 3 Beehive Villages each contain 14-15 traditional grass dome huts arranged in a semi-circle around a communal sandy area. All beehives are uniquely en-suite with shower, basin and toilet. Although electricity is provided, the dark nature of the huts provides for a good quality sleep. These villages are perfect for groups and individual travellers.
7 self-catering cottages range from 2-3 bed Lontweni Rondavels to the 6-bed Shonalanga Family Cottage, sited along the ridge overlooking the Mhlambanyati River valley always busy with nyala, zebra, blesbuck wildebeest and kudu. Each cottage has a private braai area with outside seating to ensure the view is maximized. For larger families, there are two sets of juxtaposed Lontweni’s, with lockable inter-leading doors.
The historical Rest Camp Huts are a primitive wooden construction, en-suite and very close to the Restaurant, with the option of double or family huts.
The Hippo Haunt Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner overlooking a picturesque Bird pool, often with hippo and crocodile. Breakfast and dinner are typically buffets, while lunches are a la carte. Groups are requested to prebook for lunches.
The Activities Centre is the booking hub for mountain biking, horse riding, game walks and game drives. It is also the beginning & end point of our exciting Rest Camp Nature & Botanical Trails, launched in November 2016. These trails provide interpretation and an astonishing list of 70 tree and plant species within the Rest Camp.
As of 08h00 Friday 20 March 2020, Big Game Parks closed Mlilwane Rest Camp as a precautionary measure. Mlilwane Sanctuary Gate will remain open for self-guided walking, running and mountain biking, but visitors are requested not to attempt to go near Rest Camp or arrive in groups.
